As EVERMORE Compassionate Pet Aftercare marks its third anniversary, I am grateful for the families and community that have trusted us on this journey. EVERMORE was founded to offer compassionate, dignified aftercare to families in our community and providing the option I want for my own family. Our mission has always been to deliver a meaningful and compassionate service for pet parents, and three years in, we have done so for hundreds of families.
Until recently, pet families in Ontario relied on their veterinary clinics for pet cremation arrangements. Many clinics work exclusively with large corporate providers like Gateway Pet Memorial, which deliver services with a focus on efficiency and partnership. Gateway's business model is closely tied to its relationships with veterinary practices, creating a system where both parties depend on each other. While efficient and mutually beneficial, this model may prioritize logistical ease over the individualized support and transparency families seek in such a personal experience. Independent providers like EVERMORE are dedicated to supporting families directly, offering dignified, compassionate care that respects the profound bond between pet parents and their beloved companions.
The pet aftercare landscape is slowly changing as new independent pet aftercare services open and environmentally conscious alternatives like Aquamation become available. These options reflect the evolving values of pet families today who want services that align with their priorities and values. EVERMORE's approach to pet aftercare contributes to this shift by offering a service that prioritizes family needs, compassion, and choice.
Research shows that pet families rely on veterinarians as their primary source of information about aftercare, with 90% of pet parents expecting their veterinarians to discuss arrangements with them and that "Owners who are not informed of their options may feel angry or believe they missed out on the opportunity to choose the ideal way to memorialize their pet," This desire for choice aligns with EVERMORE’s mission: to provide a family centred alternative that meets the needs of pet parents looking for more personal support and transparency. In fact, it was the absence of choices, when our beloved Joey passed in 2019, that inspired us to provide one.
When I first started EVERMORE, I didn’t anticipate becoming an advocate for pet parents’ right to choose. But as the years have passed, and sadly other independent pet aftercare providers in Ontario closed, it became clear that without advocacy, the choices available to pet families would continue to diminish. As we enter our fourth year, I am more committed than ever to ensuring that families have access to the transparency, respect, and dignity they deserve in aftercare. As pet parents, having access to aftercare options that resonate with our values matters. Thank you to all who have supported EVERMORE, trusted us with your beloved pets, and shared in our vision for a more compassionate and family centred approach.
