HONOURING OUR BELOVED PETS: REVIVING THE TRADITION OF RELIQUARIES.

Traveling through Europe, I found myself captivated by the rich history and tradition of memorializing loved ones, particularly through the use of reliquaries. These exquisite, ornamental pieces displayed in museums, cathedrals, and catacombs served as vessels for the physical remains or personal effects of religiously significant individuals.

With early Christian origins, reliquaries served not just as containers for relics but as objects of veneration, believed to provide a tangible connection to the divine. They played a crucial role in the religious and social life of communities and were often believed to have protective and miraculous powers.  The artistry of reliquaries evolved and reflected the art and architectue of their times with examples throught the world.

The portability of reliquaries took place in the middle ages with the rise of pilgram culture.  During the 17th and 18th centuries, it was common to find reliquaries containing hair, bones, or even skulls, intricately crafted to honour and remember important figures, and some were even worn as pendants.

This beautiful tradition inspired me to consider how we can bring the concept of reliquaries into the present to keep our beloved pets close to our hearts. Just as reliquaries served as a way to connect with and remember the past, we can use similar practices to celebrate and honour the lives of our pets, who have brought us immense joy and companionship. I carry Lucy’s microchip in a pendant close to my heart, and many pet parents carry their beloved pet’s cremated remains or fur clippings in the same way people long before us did for their special loved ones.

At EVERMORE, we are inspired by this historical tradition to offer a modern take on reliquaries for pet memorials. Our collection includes unique and beautifully designed urns and memorial pieces that hold a special place in our hearts and homes. These pieces are crafted not only to preserve the physical remains of our pets but also to evoke the warmth and happiness they brought into our lives.

Through centuries, reliquaries have evolved from simple containers to magnificent works of art, each telling a story of faith, devotion, and the human desire to remember and honor the past.  The tradition of reliquaries teaches us that memory and love transcend time. By bringing this concept into our pet memorials, we ensure that the spirit and joy of our cherished companions remain a part of our everyday lives.
